SUNDAY, AUGUST 10 CONCERTS
The St. Joseph Municipal Band concerts of August 10 represents the 8th of 12 double concerts planned at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph for the 2008 season. Director Dr. Donald Moely, announced the concert begins with "March and Procession of Bacchus by Leo Delibes, arranged for band by Tom Clark. The euphonium section leader of the band, Robert Rusk is featured in a solo entitled "Seascape" by Alfred Reed. ROBERT RUSK, a native of South Bend received his initial musical training in the public school music program. As a student at John Adams Senior High, he performed as the tubist with the South Bend and Elkhart Symphony orchestra. Mr. Rusk is a graduate of the Indian University School of Music. He studied with the late William Bell, a former member of the John Philip Sousa band. His primary teacher was the late Arnold Jacobs, tubist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 44 seasons. He was a member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra, and was tubist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for 25 seasons and performed with the Peninsula Music Festival in Door County for 13 seasons. While in Milwaukee, he served on the music faculties of the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee, Northwestern University and Lawrence College The next performs "One Note Samba," by Mendonza. This is followed by a performance by the Light House Chorus, under the direction of Gene Hanover. THE LIGHTHOUSE CHORUS was formed in 1999 in Niles Michigan by 5 local men that had a vision of a group of men that would perform all over the greater Michiana Metro area. Since then this group has become very popular performing in parks throughout southwestern Michigan and northern Indiana as well as throughout Michigan and even in Ohio. Director, Brother Gene Hanover, FSD is a vocal instructor at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, has a vocal studio in Bridgman and is a clinician for many vocal seminars throughout the United States and Canada. "We are a group of average men that enjoy singing. Some are seasoned singers and performers others cannot read music and have two left feet but we help them every step of the way. We really have a great time in every rehearsal." This is the fifth year the Lighthouse Chorus is performing with the Municipal Band and they feel that it is one of their favorite performances of the year. The band returns with "The March of the Siamese Children" from the musical ‘The King and ,’ and "Selections from Music Man," by Ira Schwartz. The concert concludes with R. B. Hall’s "S.I.B.A. March." The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E. N. Howard band shell are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday, August 31 and conclude with the final set of concerts Monday, September 1, Labor Day. |
