SUNDAY, AUGUST 3 CONCERTS @ 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The St. Joseph Municipal Band continues the 2008 summer season with its normal set of double concerts on Sunday, August 3rd at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. The weekly summer concerts are held at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in downtown St. Joseph overlooking the St. Joe River and Lake Michigan.

The August 3rd concerts, the 6th of 12 double concerts scheduled for the season, will feature the Municipal Band Brass Quintet lead by William Camp, Chicago trumpet soloist, and two guest vocalists: Paul Mow and Carrie VanDenburgh.

Director Dr. Moely announced the band concert will begin with a special opening ceremony including a special arrangement of "The National Anthem." It is an extended concert version sung by guest vocalist for the concerts, Carrie VanDenburg. Dr. Moely said "we wanted to start this concert with a special production of our national anthem to initiate the opening week of the Olympics. The arrangement is by Clydesdale and was made popular by Sandy Patty. The band then continues it normal opening ceremony with the familiar strains of "Strike up the Band."

The first number of the concert then continues with the recognition of the opening of the Olympic, August 8, with a famous fanfare written for one of the previous Olympics which is often heard in all the broadcasts of the Olympics. It's the "Olympic Fanfare and Theme" by John Williams.

This is followed by the "Billboard March," by John Klohr. The band then features the music of French composer Michel Legrand, in "'Michell Legrand in Concert." The piece feature some of his famous songs including "The Windmills of Your Mind," and "What are you Doing the Rest of Your Life?"

Next the band features some of it's members who formed the Municipal Band Brass Quintet. The Brass Quintet includes the following members: William Camp and Charles Steck, trumpets; Stacie Detgen, French Horn; Gary Cooper, Trombone, and Jason Harris, Tuba.

THE MUNICIPAL BAND BRASS QUINTET is coordinated by William Camp, who has his Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Michigan and is presently a professional trumpet player in Chicago. He regularly performs with the Chicago Classic Brass and has also performed in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, and at La Scala, Italy. 

Charles Steck
, is Associate Director of Bands and Choirs at LaPorte High School, and Instructor of Trumpet and Trumpet Choir at Valparaiso University. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music from Valparaiso University. He regularly performs with the LaPorte County Symphony, Elkhart County Symphony, North American Brass Company, and the Tom Milo Big Band. 

Stacie Detgen, instrumental music teacher at Charlotte Middle School. She is a graduate of Michigan State University and has a Master of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. She is in her 16th year at Charlotte M. S. And 29th year in the St. Joseph Municipal Band. In addition to teaching, she teaches privately and is an active adjudicator. 

Gary A. Cooper attended Lake Michigan College, Indiana University of South Bend and the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. Cooper has played with the Michigan Opera Orchestra as well as the South Bend, Kalamazoo and Chicago Civic Symphonies. He is Artist in Residence in the St. Joseph Choir and Band programs. He also teaches at the Arts Center for the Salvation Army and teaches private lessons.

Jason Harris is a tool and die maker of Marcellus, who is completing his Master’s Degree in Tuba performance this fall at Western Michigan University. In addition to performing with various ensembles at Western Michigan University, Jason has also performed with the Southwester Michigan College Brass Band and the Westshore Symphony orchestra.

Next the band plays a Sousa march "The Invincible Eagle.

The band next features it's guest tenor vocalist Paul Mow, who will sing "Recorded by Sinatra," an arrangement by Warren Barker.

 

PAUL MOW has quickly establishing himself as one of America's most promising young performers. Tenor Paul Mow began his third consecutive season with the New York City Opera in 2003-04. Mr. Mow was on the roster of the New York City Opera for over four years, performing both leading & secondary roles as well as covers in a multitude of productions. In addition to NYCO at Lincoln Center, Mr. Mow has enjoyed several engagements at Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City. He has performed many other leading tenor roles including Don Jose in Carmen, Lt. Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos, Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, Max in Der Freischütz, Tristan in Tristan und Isolde, and Herodes in Salome. Paul has performed domestically with a variety of opera companies, including the Opera Orchestra of New York, Glimmerglass Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Bard Sumerscape, Berkshire Opera, Brooklyn Opera, Opera Company of North Carolina, Anchorage Opera, Tulsa Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Summer Opera of Washington, D.C., Lyric Opera Colorado as well as internationally with the Folks theater Rostock in Germany in 2005. Here in Southwest Michigan, Paul has performed with the Southwest Michigan

The band then brings Carrie VanDenburgh forward to sing with guest vocalist Paul Mow, "Time to Say Goodby." This is a famous duet, sung both in Italian and English made popular by Sarah Brighman and Andrea Bocelli.

CARRIE VANDENBURGH, is a native of California, who grew up in a musical family, studying piano and violin from an early age. Although she loved to sing and grew up singing in choirs, she never thought it was something she would pursue until her high school choir teacher gave her a solo. Thrilled with the exhilaration of performing, Carrie decided to take lessons and began studying privately. Following her graduation from high school, Carrie at Pacific Union College for two years before transferring to Andrews University to study under the tutelage of Mr. Stephen Zork. Carrie completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance in 2000 and obtained her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance in 2002, both from Andrews University. During her studies at Andrews University, she received several vocal performance scholarships. Additionally, she also had the privilege of being part of Master Classes with Lustsina Kazatchenko from the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, Diane Kesling from the Metropolitan Opera, and Moises Parker from the Strassbourg Opera. In the past few years, she has been the soloist for Bach’s Magnificat, John Rutter’s Gloria, Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Laudate Dominum , Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Ramirez’s Misa Criolla and played a role in the musical Godspell. Mrs. VanDenburgh was also a winner in the Young Artist Competition, 2000 and 2001. Currently, Carrie VanDenburgh is a music teacher at Bridgman Public Schools where she teaches high school choir. She also teaches private lessons out of her home and is an adjunct voice teacher at Lake Michigan College.

The band then concludes the concert with "Collosus of Columbia," by Russell Alexander. 

The hour long Municipal Band concerts at the John E. N. Howard band shell are held each Sunday at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday, August 31 and conclude with the final set of concerts Monday, September 1, Labor Day.
